Bible Scriptures About Being Grateful

A nice car, financial freedom, a home, family, friends, vacations, a job… All these are things to be grateful for. And rightfully so! The list can actually go on and on.

Hey… with the crazy cost of living these days, most of us find joy with just being able to cover our bills each month! Or simply being able to afford food. And this is perfectly fine as well!

Big or small, a blessing is a blessing. And what might be small for one may be a huge deal for another. All blessings deserve gratitude!

So we all have varying definitions of what is significant to us. And we all have different things to be grateful for! But what does God say? As children of the true and living God… what does He say?

At the very minimum, what are the things to be grateful for, according to the Word of God?

Each person’s goals are different. So too are our priorities and the things that we put value on. For example; some prefer a stable 9-5 job, while others prefer entrepreneurship.

Some may choose to rent a budget apartment, while prioritizing travelling the world. Others may opt for a house with a huge mortgage, forfeiting the ability to travel, and be perfectly fine with it.

And then there’s most of us that are just happy to be able to put food on the table and keep our lights on. If that works out because of a temporary job, permanent post, side hustle or combination of all three… so be it. And to God be the glory!

Dear Gratitude Journal, I am Grateful for Everything!

Regardless of what we achieve, what we have or what we still wish for, we need to practice gratitude. We need to be thankful at all times, and for everything!

“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Unfortunately, we have a tendency to forget certain small details. It’s human nature after all. These so happen to be the things that God wants us to put priority on.

woman holding up heart sign at sunset

Sadly, the things that we are grateful for are influenced by our personality traits, socioeconomic backgrounds, and specific situations. Not to mention how vulnerable we are to trends, consumerism and social media influencers trying to convince us that we need X,Y,Z …and the whole rest of the alphabet, to be considered cool kids today.

And tomorrow’s going to be something else! My oh my… it’s amazing how influencers have broadened the definition of a “need” over the past few years. Step aside food, shelter, love, clothing and education! We aren’t grateful for these anymore!

We now need: “likes” and attention on social media, brand new cars, luxury brands, expensive lotions and serums, frequent spa and beauty treatments, shopping hauls, houses we can barely afford, plus routine remodelling of those same houses, costly gadgets that need upgrading annually…

The list never ends! Neither does the associated price of the items on the list!

Is this what we are grateful for these days? Are these the things that are the center of our focus? Are these the only things worth highlighting in our gratitude journals? That’s all?! Are we that shallow and flaky?

Unfortunately… that’s what we’ve now come to! We’ve simmered down to a society of attention seeking and selfish people. And anyone who kicks against this lifestyle… they’re just jealous or “a hater”.

How rotten and embarrassing have we become! The Bible did warn us!

Things to Be Grateful For – Warning! (2 Timothy 3:1-7)

“In the last days there will be difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.

They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.

They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

They are the kind who work their way into people’s homes and win the confidence of vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of sin and controlled by various desires.

Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.”

young woman looking into mirror sadly

Ummm… did the Bible warn us about social media and the dangers of influencers? I think it did! An entire section of scripture, absolutely on point. It’s too accurate to ignore. We better check ourselves!

If the extent of our gratitude pivots on what the world perceives to be worthy of gratitude, this is a terrible approach.

Our happiness at any given point cannot be that volatile and fragile! Hanging by a thread and based on the next piece of trendy merch or asset that we acquire. Even though we are thankful in all circumstances and for everything, we need to be better than this.

Can we enjoy the finer things in life, without becoming susceptible to greed and selfish desires? Can we appreciate material wealth (to a safe extent), along with the luxury that is life, good health, fresh air and freedom.

Can we be grateful for physical possessions and opportunities, without idolizing them? Can we take a moment to be grateful for Jesus Christ and salvation? How about God’s mercy and His faithfulness?

Let’s examine what the Word of God says about gratitude, and capture the things to be grateful for, as a believer and follower of Christ. The things that we should truly be prioritizing!

Let these scriptures about being grateful be our guide. Hopefully you get some more substantial additions for your gratitude journal with these.
