59+ Uplifting Grief Quotes & Bible Verses for Grief

September 22, 2025 Lorrenzo Ramkissoon

Spread the love

Grief Scriptures to Comfort, Heal & Inspire

In the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy, Queen Elizabeth II stated that “Grief is the price we pay for love.” Regardless of our conflicting views on the monarchy and politics, this remains as one of the most iconic grief quotes of the modern day.

It sums up the grieving process perfectly. Grief is a consequence of love. It is a risk we take when we choose to love. Or a line that we toe whenever we experience love. But, it’s a chance that we must take!

As children of God, we must love! And since God wants us to love, He will be there with us in our times of grief as well! We can stand assured that God will be with us, guiding us through our moments of grief!

“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:8)

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)

Actually, the Queen’s quote was an adaptation of a statement from renowned British psychiatrist and grief expert, Dr. Colin Murray Parkes:

“The pain of grief is just as much a part of life as the joy of love; it is, perhaps, the price we pay for love, the cost of commitment.” (Parkes, 1972, Bereavement: Studies of Grief in Adult Life)

We were made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26). And since God is love, it is in our nature to love as well. Because love and grief go hand in hand, we will experience times of grief.

However, since God and love also go hand in hand, God is always with us. We are never alone and we will conquer any moments of sadness with the help of God.

“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:16)

We can all agree that grief is experienced when we lose something that we love. Whether it’s a loved one due to death, a strained relationship, a job, physical possession, a financial predicament, health concerns, a change of some sort, etc.

“Jesus wept.” – John the Apostle

This particular scripture for grief is in regards to an action from Jesus, as opposed to something He said. And is quoted from John the Apostle.

It’s more powerful than we give it credit for. Despite being the shortest verse in the Bible, it’s context makes it extremely significant.

Jesus wept, along with the other people that were grieving at the death of their loved one. This shows that God is empathetic and understands how we feel.

It also shows that God may be saddened by our disbelief and our underestimation of His power.

We need to lean on God in our moments of grief because He truly knows and connects with our heart. And He is powerful enough to fix our situation!

God wants us to depend on Him and He will deliver!
